In February of 2001, Christ the King in Combined Locks voted unanimously to build a sister church in Sherwood, Wisconsin. Ground was broken in May of 2002 and the first worship service was held in the new Christ the King Sherwood on October 20, 2002. Pastor Steve Nelson was the founding pastor and led the first worship service. Pastor Bill Schroeder was the Associate Pastor installed to lead worship.

In 2004, Pastor Steve left to accept a call in Minnesota, and Pastor Doug Bisbee became the Senior Pastor in Combined Locks with Pastor Bill remaining Pastor to Sherwood. In this capacity the two pastors would preach every other week at both Sherwood and Combined Locks, pastoral care was handled by Pastor Bill in Sherwood.

In 2009, Pastor Doug retired and Pastor Bill became Senior Pastor. Previous intern Pastor Tim Krick became Associate Pastor and the two continue to alternate preaching schedules. At this time, Christ the King Sherwood was outgrowing our Christian Education rooms, and in October 2009 the new addition was completed, adding four new classrooms and much flexibility in the space. Due to this growth, we determined it no longer was a benefit to be yoked to the Combined Locks church, and we officially became Christ the King Sherwood.

In 2011, Pastor Bill left to accept a call elsewhere, and after several interim pastors, Pastor Doug Holtz was called to serve in 2013. When Pastor Doug accepted a call in Oshkosh in 2018, Pastor Roland Lindeman came to serve us as an interim for what he thought would be six months, and ended up being three years!

In February 2022, we welcomed Pastor Carl Evans as the newest Christ the King Sherwood pastor!

The motto of Christ the King Sherwood has always been to welcome everyone and to be a friendly congregation. Come as you are!

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with nearly 3.3 million members in more than 8,900 worshiping communities across the 50 states and in the Caribbean region.

The East-Central Synod of Wisconsin is one of 65 regional groupings of congregations and other ministry sites within the ELCA. The area we serve in Wisconsin stretches from the bottom of Lake Winnebago to the Northwoods, from the shores of the Bay to the path of the Wisconsin River.

A synod is a way of organizing the church that helps congregations, ministry sites and leaders stay connected to each other and to the wider church beyond our region and outside our denomination. Because we’re intentionally connected and turned outward in this way, we help each other fight the human tendency to only look inward and care about the people who are closest to and most like us.
